Shape-Ups

"Shape-Ups" Not Recommended for Children:

Skechers has recently introduced a shoe from its popular "Shape-Ups" line in girls' sizes. And parents and podiatrists aren't happy about it.

"The shoe's rocking bottom can cause ankle injury, especially if these little kids are running around a lot," she said. She also warned against the dangers of disrupting the "gait of a growing child." (Susan Levine, DPM)

Foot pain by dancer sparks lawsuit

Flying stripper shoe sparks lawsuit in Indiana

Dancer shoes cause foot painWhen 34-year-old Jake Quagliaroli attended Indiana exotic dancing club PT's Showclub on a recent evening, he probably didn't expect that it would result in a chipped tooth and a lawsuit.

CBSnews.com reports that Quagliaroli is now suing the club after one of the dancer's shoes flew off her foot and hit him in the mouth, resulting in what he claims are serious dental injuries.

The man is alleging negligence and battery in the lawsuit and will let the jury decide the monetary damages.

The cause of the flying shoe is unknown, but many times when shoes go rogue, it is the result of improper fit. The towering Lucite heels sometimes worn by exotic dancers may cause enough foot pain without the added dangers of ill-fitting shoes. The two factors combined may lead to even more problems for the strip club: bunions and hammer toe.

Dancers relieve foot pain with bunion splints

Luckily, these ladies may not need to take time off from dancing due to painful, expensive bunion surgery as podiatrists say that bunion splints or orthotics may be effective in preventing and treating bunion and hammer toe.

SKECHERS A PODIATRISTS VIEW

Another patient came in today with hip pain, heel pain and metatarsalgia secondary to excessively worn Skechers Shape-Ups. These shoes are everywhere (podiatry conferences included) and many patients have jumped on this “lose weight and tone while you walk” bandwagon.

Unfortunately, what patients do not realize is that when these shoes wear out — and they wear out fast — significant lower extremity problems can arise. While the soft medial EVA is initially good for shock absorption, it compresses quickly. This creates an excessively pronated shoe, even when barefoot pronation is otherwise minimal.

The above image is of the Skechers Shape-Ups my patient brought in today. Watching her teeter totter down the hall in these unstable shoes rivaled even the wobbliest high heels I have seen.

If your patients opt to wear these shoes, make sure you instruct them on how to determine when the shoes are worn out. Even the best treatment plan will be ineffective if your patient returns to wearing these shoes.
